Toronto Lakeshore in Oils

A breakwater creates a place of sanctuary, a relief from the wild waves and rough water. The place of calm extends onto the shoreline where waves can no longer erode and destroy. The benefits of a place of calm are felt throughout the ecology of an area.

It leaves me meditating on the rhythm of the waves, the sunlight glancing across and shining through the water. More importantly I contemplate how to be the breakwater for my dear ones, learning the lesson from those who have shown me grace in times of tumult.

It leaves me thinking about the ceaselessly rolling waves, the tumult beyond the breakwater and the sounds of shore birds in the sky., thinking about the things that draw us together and meditating on gratitude.

This painting has been inspired by my dear sister-in-law Jan‘s video of the Lake Ontario lakeshore near Toronto. Jan passed away suddenly in May and has left us all bereft. Yet we are reminded of all the seeds of love, compassion and empathy she sewed into our lives. She was the breakwater for her family and many others. Now we must needs find ways to grow into that role for each other.

May this painting speak to your heart from my heart.

Though this piece is still in progress, she's reached a resting point. I hope you'll come back and see how she finishes up.

Time to pause and reflect.

Tweaks to follow...

Painting Possibilities and Dreams

"Summer Glory" interprets the ephemeral display of colours in the evening sky over my town,
I confess to being a little obsessed with clouds and skies. So much potential, so many possibilities, mysteries and dreams. Sometimes it makes driving a little tricky... ;)

This is the largest canvas I've painted to date and I loved the process. So much freedom, so much movement!
